Colorado Trip 2019

For our big summer adventure, we decided to travel to Colorado to visit Grammy and experience the mountains. We did a Colorado trip a few years ago, but we wanted to go back again now that the girls are older. I kept a 'travel journal' to document our trip.

Day 1: When in Amarillo... Cadillac Ranch! Turns out both my girls have dreams of being graffiti artists when they grow up 🤣. The sun was setting as we got there and with that wind blowing- it made for a beautiful evening. We were gifted two cans of spray paint by some kids. So we made our addition to this iconic landmark. It was like a group art project - with strangers. I couldn’t get over that big Texas sky.

Day 2: We drove to Colorado and met Grammy and Gramps at the Garden of the Gods. It was super hot! But we had fun scrambling on the rocks and walking the trails. After hiking, we drove to Grammy's house. A huge storm hit and there was horrible hail- like we have never seen. The power at Grammy's house went out for several hours. We went to dinner and when we got home, we were so happy to see the power was back on! Her new home is so pretty- it was fun to see all the things they have done to the house since they moved in.

Day 3: We were up and at em early! Grammy and Gramps took us on a family hike. It was just challenging enough to keep us all on our toes! Great trail that ended with a breathtaking view and a picnic lunch. Outside adventures with family are the best. The girls loved walking and talking with Grammy and watching Sadie run around. We made it down just before the rain hit. It was another crazy hail storm.

Day 4: Jeff and I left the girls to have an adventure with Grammy- and we went to a little date/adventure ourselves! Jeff and I took the Pikes Peak Highway up to the South Catamount Reservoir. The flat, clear water was surrounded by mountains and trees. We saw a few people fishing from the banks but no one else was out on the water. I have never been somewhere so quiet. We worked our way around the entire reservoir in 2 hours. Jeff was brave enough to jump in, I only dipped my feet. And now we can say we’ve been paddle boarding at 9,200 feet! Then we checked into the “Garden of the Gods Resort” - the view of the red rock formations from the pool and our room was pretty spectacular. Ended the night with pizza and wine on the patio.

Day 5 : After we picked up the girls, we had lunch and did some shopping in Frisco. Then checked into our condo in downtown Breckenridge. We spent the day exploring- went on a hike and found a new friend (the Breckenridge Troll), ate dinner at Ollie's Pub and Grub, then hit the hot tub on our back porch!

Day 6: We had breakfast on the Blue River and then did a little shopping. Afton has started collecting funky socks. She is on the hunt for ‘grilled cheese’ socks. We haven’t found them yet. But it’s been a fun quest. (And she has collected 3 new pairs in the process! 🥨🍿). Then we went on half-day rafting excursion on the Colorado River. The water level is high from all the snow they got this year, so we didn’t have many white rapids. But the highlight was watching Afton and Jeff jump off a 22-foot cliff straight into the icy cold river. They are so brave!!! We finished the day with more hot tubbin’ and then pizza at Fatty's Pizza.

Day 7 : Last day in Breckenridge we spent at the ‘Epic Discovery Park’ at Peak 8. We had fun riding the Alpine Slide and the Mountain Coaster, panning for gold, playing mini-golf (Maisy got a hole in one!) and all the other park attractions. Craziest part of the day was getting stuck at the top of the Alpine Slide due to a storm. After about 30 minutes they let us slide down, but it was quite the adventure! 😜 The rain stuck around for the rest of the day. We had our last dinner Mi Casa Breck (Afton wore her new Colorado socks and Maisy sported these polar bear leggings we found at a cute store in town.) We had so much fun on our mountain vacation but we are happy to be heading home to Texas!
